Remembering My Father, Honoring My Son
Jim Smith is an elite athlete and a fierce competitor. He is also a passionate supporter of hospice.
Vernon Smith, Jim’s dad, was his best friend and hero. Hospice made a huge difference at the end of his life.
In 2010, Jim ran the Badwater Ultramarathon in his father’s memory, and raised significant dollars for the National Hospice Foundation through NHF’s Run to Remember athletic fundraising program.
This year, Jim is taking his commitment—and his competitive spirit—to a whole new level.
- He has put together a series of very tough endurance races. And he’ll cap them off with the Marine Corps Marathon.
- Vermont 100-Mile Endurance Run (July 16-17)
- 24 Hours of Triathlon in Milwaukee (July 22-23)
- The Bear 100 (Sept. 23-24, Utah and Idaho)
- The Marine Corps Marathon (October 30, Washington, DC area) – This will be his “victory lap”. He will run it along with his wife, Amy, and the rest of the Run to Remember hospice team
- He has set a fundraising goal of $100,000
- He is dedicating all the proceeds from his fundraising to We Honor Veterans.
Jim says, “This year, I am raising money for the We Honor Veterans program, which is aimed at improving the care veterans receiving from hospice. This is such a perfect fit for me. My dad was a Navy Veteran. My son, Tyler, is serving in the Army right now. He has been deployed to Afghanistan. We have a proud tradition of military service in our family. I am honored to do my part to help serve those who served us. “
