November 10, 2021 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm EST
Purpose: The goal of this webinar is to educate professionals who work with Holocaust survivors, veterans, and other trauma survivors to recognize signs of trauma. Learners will become aware of potential loss of empathy for trauma survivors and will gain practical solutions to self-monitor and improve delivery of person-centered, trauma-informed care. Participants will also become attuned to the narrative of resilience, hope, and meaning as a function of post-traumatic growth to enhance the end-of-life experience.
Why Do I Need to Know This? Over the past number of years that hospice and healthcare providers have learned about post-traumatic stress and its manifestations in patients/families in the care delivery process, there has been little attention or awareness of post-traumatic growth and resilience as a response to significant trauma. This educational program will shed light on this important topic through first-hand accounts of a Holocaust survivor, a Veteran/Liberator, and children of a Liberator. There will also be a didactic session from at noted psychologist and trauma specialist.
Objectives:
- Discuss how personal experiences or history of trauma might present in patients
- Recognize and prevent the inherent risk in medical settings for unintentional loss of empathy towards trauma survivors
- Explore the coexistence of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) alongside resilience and post-traumatic growth (PTG)
- Discuss how the search for meaning influenced the lives of survivors and liberators of WWII
